Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Day of rest. Went to church. The talks in Sacrament were on the true meaning of Christmas. I like those type of talks. Christmas is about the Atonement of Christ. His birth would not deserve a celebration had it not been for his sacrifice and resurrection. The lesson in Sunday school was on exaltation. I missed the Elder's Quorum lesson because Julia was sick and I had to take her home.

A.M. I thought that I was glad to be done with the run yesterday, but today's run added a new dimension. The trail was not usable if I wanted to get to work on time, so I paced back and forth on the 0.75 stretch of Independence Avenue until I was done with the distance. I thought of the irony of the name "Independence High School" - for kids that are trying too hard to prove their independence. Finished my 8 miles, then I got back home and started helping a neighbor get his truck out of the snow when Sarah came with our neighbor little girl who was in panic because she did not have a way to get to school on time for an event she considered to be very important - her brother was not willing to drive in the snow, nor would anybody else. Sarah came up with a brilliant idea - put her in the stroller and run with her. In spite of the snow and a late start I got her there only 4 minutes late, and out and back added 1.4 miles to my run. I am sure glad we home school our kids, though. Then I ran another 3.15 around the block with the kids. Jacob did 0.7, Joseph 1.05, Jenny and Julia 2.1, and Benjamin 3.15. I ended up with 12.55.

A.M. Had some time on Christmas Eve and decided to run with each child individually while I can rather than combining some of the runs to save time. Did 4 with Benjamin in 31:51, 2 with Julia in 17:13, 1 with Joseph in 8:18, 0.5 with Jacob in 4:24, and 2 with Jenny in 16:48. Then the remaining 2.5 by myself. Total time for 12 miles was 1:35:12 (7:56 average) with 9.5 of done done with the kids ages  4 through 11!

Merry Christmas to all. Celebrated it with a long run. Total of 20. Did a part of it with the kids. Benjamin ran 3, Jenny and Julia 2, Jacob 0.5, and Joseph 1. Did a 5 mile tempo from 8.5 to 13.5 in 28:18 (5:46 - 5:38 - 5:40 - 5:40 - 5:34). Also picked  it up to a bit sub-6:00 in the last mile to test/stimulate fuel storage.
