Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of nine children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary, and Bella.  We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Track workout with the kids in the AM, 4 miles in the PM. Julia and Stephen did 2x800 with full rest, first together in 3:04.8, second Stephen 3:02.7, Julia 3:06.8. In between did Bonnie's mile time trial - she ran 6:17.5, struggled in the last two laps. William and Jacob were running along, but when she slowed down they just kept the pace and ran 6:05. Then Joseph, Jacob and I did 4x100 15.7, 15.1, 15.2, 15.2.

Jenny did 4+4 today, now running back to normal in terms of distance, but her diaphragm is still strained, so she will not be doing speed for a few weeks.

Today our Stephen got baptized, which required rearranging our usual Saturday schedule. Also some of the kids started developing colds, so they cut their mileage some.

Chad and I met at 6 am, and ran a total of 16 in the canyon with a 5 mile tempo after 3 and another 2 mile tempo slower at the end. I struggled at the start of the 5 mile tempo - we went 5:42, 5:38, 5:35. I thought I would warm up, and get into a rhythm, and I was to an extent, but not enough to handle 5:35. Afterwards, I managed another 0.75 with Chad at about 5:42 pace, and then 6:00 was I could do - like a car with a broken transmission stuck in a lower gear. Chad went ahead and finished in 28:07. My 4th mile was 5:49, and I managed to shift gears in the last quarter enough to get 5:52 for the last mile - 28:36.9 total.

There is a saying in Russian that once the fight is over you should not be shaking your fists. So at first I thought I wanted to be done with speed for today. But then during the rest of the run I started feeling somewhat better, and thought it would be beneficial to run a 2 mile tempo down the canyon off low glycogen and overall fatigue of the distance. I thought it would be very good if I could just manage 6:00. When we started, it seemed like this would be a challenge - the first quarter was 94. But then I started getting into a rhythm and felt much better. We had 5:59 for the first mile, and 5:46 for the second.
