Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Day of rest. Went to church.  The talks in Sacrament were on the restoration of the gospel in the last days. The lesson in Sunday school was on observing the Sabbath day. The lesson in the Elder's quorum was on mothers.

A.M. Ran a total of 10.1 with Jeff. Met him on the trail. We did an 800 meter time trial. First we went to the BYU track, but it was closed for construction. So we went to the Provo High track. We do not run much on the track normally, only when we want to test ourselves.

The results were 2:07.5 for Jeff and 2:16.2 for me. I was 4 seconds slower than my PR of 2:12, which is not a bad start. Jeff started 200 earlier, I joined him at 200, so he finished at my 600 and I ran another 200 alone. We did it so to maximize the distance of running together. My splits were 31, 32 (63), 35 (1:38), and 38. I felt the breathing was OK, but I lacked the leg power. Jeff felt the same way. I was able to stay with Jeff for 400 meters. What was odd is that I thought I had sped up in the last 200, but I have actually slowed down a lot. Up to 600 I was on pace for a PR, but then did not have the strength.

Jenny and Julia ran 2. I did 2 with Benjamin in 15:53. 0.5 with Jacob and Kaytlin in 5:43. Benjamin ran 0.5 with Joseph in in 4:25.

A.M. 10 with Jeff and some with Matt in 1:18:32. 2 with Benjamin in 15:03, last mile in 6:16. Jenny and Julia ran 2. Did a 0.25 pickup at 5:30 pace.

P.M. Decided to hold Jacob's hand to help him with steady pacing to see if he'd be able to keep up with Joseph and how Joseph would react to it. Benjamin was with Joseph to help us. Joseph tried several surges, but Jacob covered them all. So Joseph could not be lazy. We ended up with 4:03 for Joseph and 4:04 for Jacob with Jacob's splits being 2:07, 1:57.

A.M. 20.1 with Jeff in 2:18:35. We warmed up for 6.22 miles, then celebrated the re-opening of the closed portion of the trail with the tempo on Fast Running Blog 5 Miler course. The target was 5:44. I was feeling good, and told Jeff 5:40 would be OK. So we did that pace pretty much dead on for the first 2.5, and then sped up. We ended up with the following splits: 5:41 - 5:39 - (14:09 at the turnaround) - 5:36 - 5:24 - then 5:30 for me, 5:16 for Jeff. Total time for me 27:50, 5:34 avg,  second half in 13:41, 4 seconds ahead of the 5:30 guy. Last 3 miles at exactly 5:30 average. Then we jogged some, and then with 2 miles to go picked up the pace to slightly sub-6:00 to get the run over with and to get a fuel stimulus. First mile was 5:56, second 5:43, total time for 2 11:39. I felt those last 2 miles were perhaps the most productive part of the workout. I felt like I was at the end of a marathon, but at the same time I was not too weak to go. I felt that I was able to achieve very good fuel economy on that stretch.

P.M. 2 with Benjamin in 15:26. 0.5 with Jacob in 4:48. Joseph and Benjamin ran 4:25.
