Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  


Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.


I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of nine children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary, and Bella.  We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Did a pace sense 2 mile tempo run with Jacob down the canyon. His target was 5:50 - without looking at his watch or getting the splits. He managed to hit the target, but was rather uneven. Then in the evening we participated in a running primary activity. Joseph, Jacob, and I set a pace on the track at Orem High that was supposed to be 6:00 per mile (we mispaced it and ran 5:53.5 instead). Everybody else was going to run "till the standard bearer fainteth". One primary kid made it to 400, and so did Stephen (86). Bonnie made it to about 900. William made it to 1200, and then kept running, and finished in 6:01. It was very hot, though. It did not help that with the help from Joseph I mispaced it and went too fast.

Then we did sprints - 100 meters. Bonnie got 15.2 - that was quite a surprise. I thought she was going to run about 16.5, and was not in a particular hurry to get going once I called the start. Then I realized I'd better get moving, and barely caught up to her at the end. Jacob ran 14.8, Stephen 17.8, Matthew 20.7 - all PRs.

Did 4x0.25 with Joseph down the canyon - he was struggling today, could not even hit 80s towards the end. Bonnie was also struggling - Jacob paced her through 2 miles down the canyon, the target was 6:40 which I thought she would hit easily, but she could only run 13:32 (6:46 pace). Then I ran some more miles myself, and more in the evening with Matthew, William and Stephen.

Total of 16. Usual Saturday distances for the kids. Did a 5 mile tempo down the canyon in 28:12.3 (5:45, 5:40, 5:32, 5:41, 5:34). Did not start with the intention of beating 5:40 average, actually did not really have any kind of a goal except be faster than 6:00, and maybe dipping under 29:00 with a good push at the end if I had some juice. First mile felt not too easy, but the second somehow ended up being 5 seconds faster. Then something happened in the third - probably a gust of tailwind - and I found myself 3 seconds ahead of the 5:40 guy. Now that I was there I felt obligated to not give him back any ground. In the last mile I found enough energy to run 5:34.
