Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.
Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)
Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).
Short-Term Running Goals:
Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.
Long-Term Running Goals:
2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.
I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew, Mary, Bella. and Leigha. We home school our children.
I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.
...if we are to have faith like Enoch and Elijah we must believe what they believed, know what they knew, and live as they lived.
Felt stronger today. Total of 13. Did a pickup with Jenny for 0.5 in 3:04, then kept going and ran 2:44 for the next 0.5 to get 5:48 for the mile. Then also did a pickup with Joseph, Jacob, and Bonnie for 1 mile in 5:47 in the afternoon - this is Bonnie PR for down the canyon.
Total of around 12. All intervals down the canyon. Did 3x0.375 with Joseph and Jacob (1:53.8, 1:51.2, 1:50.6) - 0.125 recovery. The target was 1:52.5 - 5:00 pace. We are working on getting used to that pace so we can break 5:00 down the canyon first. Then, once successful, we will try to repeat or at least get close on the track. Bonnie and William did 2x0.25 in around 77 or so - they both were not 100% today.
Also did Stephen's workout with William - 4x0.25 with 0.125 recovery with the target of 90 seconds - we were a bit faster.
William and Stephen ended up with 7 total today - somewhat on accident.
Warm-up with Joseph, Jacob, Bonnie, William, and Stephen.
Workout with Joseph and Jacob - part with Bonnie and William - 3x0.375 down the canyon.
Usual 12 today, usual distances for the kids. Did a mile pickup in 5:39.9 with Joseph and Jacob, first 0.5 was in 2:54 with Bonnie, then we sped up a bit, then a lot in the last quarter which we did in 79.
With Joseph, Jacob, and Bonnie. Part with William and Stephen.
12 total, more or less usual distances for the kids. Did a mile pickup with Joseph, Jacob, and Bonnie in 5:48. Also Matthew wanted to run in the canyon today, so he did 2 miles, one down in 7:05, then a bit of rest, and one up in 7:47. Then ran 4 more with William, we got some snow and rain on us in the canyon, but once we got out, it was much better.
With Joseph, Jacob, and Bonnie - part with Stephen.
Total of about 16, did 3x0.375 with 0.125 recovery with Joseph and Jacob at 5:00 pace, then 4x0.25 at a bit faster than 90 with William, Stephen, and Bonnie, then a 2 mile tempo in 11:13 (5:37, 5:36) alone - all down the canyon. Also did 6 more with Jenny in the evening with a mile pickup in 6:18.
