Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.
Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)
Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).
Short-Term Running Goals:
Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.
Long-Term Running Goals:
2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.
I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew, Mary, Bella. and Leigha. We home school our children.
I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Total of 11. Usual distances for everybody except Stephen - he his his head playing on the playground, so we figured he should take a day off to recover. I did 4x0.125 down the canyon (35-36 range) with 0.0625 recovery, and a hill sprint for 0.155 at the end in 48.9.
Usual distances for everybody except Stephen. Julia did 1 mile at around 7:30 pace for the first 3 laps with the last lap in 89 - total time of 7:03. This is part of her preparation to attack 6:00 mile. Joseph and I paced Jacob over 5000 on the track at Orem High to a new PR of 18:55.0. His 1K splits were 3:39, 3:48, 3:51, 3:52, 3:45. Last lap was 86. I got a sense that his weakness right now is aerobic endurance, which makes sense given his age - 11 years old.
Did 3 in the morning with Jenny, William, Joseph, and Jacob - the boys ran ahead a bit. In the afternoon did 8x0.625 in the canyon, first 4 up, last 4 down. The recovery was 0.125 jog. There was extra rest between the 5th and the 6th interval due to a VPB. Then I ran 2.04 with Jenny, Stephen, our neighbor Bonnie, Joseph, and Jacob. Joseph and Jacob ran ahead in the second half. Then we had the same company replacing Stephen with Sarah and Matthew for 1 more mile. Joseph, Jacob, and I paced Matthew to a 7:55.0 mile on the little boy course (out and back). We had a hard time recently getting him focused, but the boys thought of a new trick which worked wonders today - they encouraged Matthew to play the Corvette game - he pretended he was a Corvette, and we made the appropriate engine noises. Afterwards we showed him a video of a Corvette speed run getting up to 200 mph.
Total of 18 today, 17 in the morning, and 1 more at night. Ran with all of the kids except Julia - she ran alone. Jenny did 9 (8+1), Joseph and Jacob 8, William 6 (5+1), Stephen 4(3+1), Julia 5, Matthew 1, Mary 0.25, Sarah 7 (6+1).
I did 2x2 down the canyon in the middle of the long run. First one from 4 to 6 (11:28), second from 12.5 to 14.5 (11:20). William ran the first 700 meters or so of the second one with me.
Most of it with Joseph, Jacob, and Jenny - I ran the tempo alone and then some extra distance.
