Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of nine children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary, and Bella.  We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Usual day, usual distances for the kids. Benjamin and I did 10 total with a 2 mile tempo down the canyon. He paced me through 10:58 (5:32,5:26). I was happy with the result as initially due to how cold it was and the extra clothes I set a target of 11:12 (84 per quarter) with the idea this might end up being too aggressive. I was definitely bothered by the cold air and the clothes, but otherwise I felt strong enough to ask Benjamin for a faster pace.

Again, more or less our usual day - 10.5 total for me. Tried to get Joseph to run the fast mile, but he was not having a good day. He was way off pace and quit at around 0.73. I am strongly suspecting he has a problem with oversensitive nervous system. Did some study of the issue. Looks like there is no cure for it except training your brain to ignore exaggerated pain reports.

Total of 20+. Benjamin did 15. The trail had some snow on it. We did a pickup for 1.5 on a section that was reasonably dry. It was cold making it hard to breathe, so we ran a bit slower. Benjamin got 7:33, I ran 8:15.

Then I ran with Joseph. He had a better day and volunteered to run a fast mile. He was able to do 5:41 down the canyon in the middle of 5.

Otherwise usual runs for the kids except William increased the distance and ran 4.

Did a workout with Benjamin. Well, on the same course and we started at the same time, and it was the same type of workout for both. His target was alternate 72 and 80 quarters for 3 miles down the canyon. My target was alternate 80 and 88. Neither one of us reached the target today. Benjamin was more or less OK on the recovery, but lost juice on the fast quarters slowing down to 77, so his recovery and fast blended together. I was hitting the fast ones on target for the most part but my recoveries eventually
deteriorated to as slow as 95. Benjamin ended up with 15:32 for 3 miles, I got 17:08.

Then we paced Jacob and Jenny for 1 mile down the canyon. Jacob got 5:44, Jenny 5:51. That is her down the canyon PR.

So Jacob ended up running 5, usual distances for other kids.

Today Stephen got a mile PR on the track - 7:30.4. Splits 1:51, 1:51, 1:56, 1:50.

Benjamin and I repeated our Tuesday's workout. It went better this time. Benjamin got the target of 72-80 alternating quarters, was 3 seconds ahead of schedule with a quarter to go, and instead of resting in 80 ran 71, so his time ended up being 14:59. I was able to stay on target for the fast ones, but gradually lost pace on the recoveries, but still did better than on Tuesday - slowest recovery was 93. I got 16:53 for 3 miles.

Jacob ran a mile down the canyon in 5:38. Joseph did 5:35.

Total distances were Jacob - 5, Joseph - 3, William - 3, Stephen - 1, Matthew 0.5, Jenny - 7, Julia - 4, Benjamin - 10.5. I got 11.5.
