Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Fast Running Friend Workout - 2014-08-02 05:25:43
Workout Totals: Distance20.500Time2:34:03.40Pace7:30.90
Total of 20.5. Started the run early to get some miles in because Jacob was getting baptized today. Jacob is our 5th child to get baptized (and he is our 5th child), and so far he came to his baptism with the fastest PRs.

Benjamin had a PR of 7:12 in the mile, and 23:31 on a dubious possibly short Payson Onion Days course which I estimated about 10 seconds short. Jenny had 24:01 in the 5 K shortly after turning 8, and I cannot find a record of her mile time trial when she was 7 and approaching 8 - possibly because she did not do one. I am going to guess she was around 7:20-7:30 range. Julia was also hard to talk into a time trial, so the best we've got out of her before she turned 8 is 7:52 in the mile.

Joseph had 6:52 in the mile when he was baptized.

Jacob, however, came to his baptism with a 21:43 5 K on a certified course (construction-altered version of Draper Days), that was hilly and proven slow by a group of consistent top runners racing for prize money. His best mile is 6:10 in the Provo Canyon, and 6:29 on the track.

I must also say that he also was the best of all of our kids so far when it came to explaining the reasons why he was getting baptized when I asked him. Not that our other kids could not explain it, but his answers were very clear and up to the point. I was quite surprised because being articulate and good with words has never appeared to be one of his talents.

I ran a total of 20 miles today. Started with 8 on my own, then did 4 more with Benjamin - 2 out easy, 2 back tempo in 11:28, Benjamin did a total of 12, then 3 more with Joseph, Jacob, Julia, Nate, and his brother Jared, one more with Benjamin and Joseph, and the rest with Benjamin. Jenny did 4, William 1, Stephen 0.5.

Tempo run with Benjamin. First mile in 5:47, and it was rolling down, so it was easy. Second mile was uphill, and Benjamin turned up the heat, but I survived - we ran it in 5:41.

With Benjamin, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, Nate, and Jared. Only two of them were not mine. Julia has had a hard time waking up early in the mornings, but when she heard that a boy her age that has just moved into our neighborhood was coming, she was ready to run at 7:00 AM with no problems.
